Court slams Gujarat Police for detaining boy
7/3/2009 9:02:00 PM

New Delhi, July 3 (IANS) The Delhi High Court has slammed the Gujarat police for illegally detaining a 13-year-old boy and asked them to compensate his mother for the harassment.

Justice B.D. Ahmed, while deciding the case, asked the Gujarat police to pay Rs.270,000 compensation to the boy's mother, Tasleema.

Shamim, the son of Tasleema, was taken away by the Gujarat police when they were looking for his father on May 25, 2008. Tasleema then lodged a complaint with Seelampur police station.

Tasleema moved the court by filing a habeas corpus petition, fearing the police might deport her son to Bangladesh.

After the court's direction, Shamim was presented before the court on June 2, 2008.

A team of Gujarat police, which arrived here in connection with an old case against Shamim's father, detained the child.

The Gujarat police told the court they took the child with them since he told them that his parents were living in Ahmedabad and he wanted to visit them.

However, the court pulled up the Gujarat police for not performing their duty properly and infringing upon fundamental rights of a citizen.
