11/16/2009 4:44:00 PM

Allahabad, Nov 16 (ANI): Converging on the banks of the river Ganga in Allahabad on Monday, hundreds of devotees took a holy dip on the occasion of Somavati Amavasya in the belief that it will give them peace and prosperity.

Somvati Amavasi, or Somavati Amavasya, is no moon day that falls on a Monday in traditional Hindu calendar.

It is said that who ever takes a dip in the holy rivers on this day, would be prosperous, free of diseases and would be free from grief and sorrow.

There is also a popular belief that the souls of ancestors will rest in peace if children and relatives take a holy dip in the holy rivers.

Married women take the holy dip for a happy married life and for the long life of their husbands. They also worship the pipal tree on the day.

Pooja, a devotee, said, Somavati Amavasya has a great importance for the married ladies and they take a holy dip in the river and then they pray for their grooms. (ANI)
