'Sikhi'- Sikh way of life promoted in Ludhiana
11/16/2009 8:07:00 PM

Ludhiana, Nov 16(ANI): A unique nation-wide initiative is underway to motivate the youth towards 'Sikhi', a way of life, which is based on the spiritual wisdom of Guru Granth Sahib.

Following the initiative, Gurudwara Singh Sabha Model Town in Ludhiana was decked up for a special event, where the participants included children in the age group of one to 25.

300 sala Gurbani kanth de naal (300 years with Gurbani by heart) was the theme that attracted these participants to show their proficiency in 'Sikhi'.

In the event that was held in three parts, children from across the country recited the prescribed Path by heart and won prizes worth 250,000 dollars.

In the modern age, the parents pay no attention to bringing their children close to divinity. But, children can be attracted if we pay reward them like Sufi saint Baba Farid's mother used to give sugar to him to offer prayers. We are also giving these children awards so that they are attracted towards spirituality, said Harbhajan Singh, a sewadar.

They will realize that they have to get closer to God, worship him and learn the 'bani'. Kids of any religion - be it Hindu or Muslim, can come and take part in this competition but the only condition is that the verses should connect to God, he added.

While children aged one year had to recite 'Waheguru', children aged four years had to recite the first seven Pauris of Japuji Sahib by heart.

Children from 18 to 25 years recited Japuji Sahib, Jaap Sahib and Ardaas, and mothers of the children were also awarded as 'Changeri Maa' (good mother).

The competition also demonstrated the fact that even in modern times people are still teaching their children the Sikh way of life.

We want to make our children learn our values. If they start learning about our culture and values now, they will involve themselves in doing good things in future and become good persons, said Inderpreet Kaur.

Ranjeet Kaur Batra, family member of a participant, said that the benefit of such competitions would inspire the participants to live a life that follows Gursikh values.

Such events are meaningful attempts to teach youngsters the true meaning of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

In a world full of hatred and greed, these children will learn valuable lessons about equality and oneness. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)
