Delhi school to raise funds to help street, slum kids
11/18/2009 5:43:00 PM

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS) St. Columba's School here is all set to host a music concert Friday, not just to entertain the audience, but raise funds for mid-day meals and a hostel for disadvantaged slum and street children.

Talking about the initiative, school's principal Father Lobo said: 'Every class in our school is involved in some kind of outreach project - be it working for slum kids, visiting old age homes or helping underprivileged children learn to use computers and upgrade their skills'.

'We have fund raisers once in three years to support our various programmes. With this year's event we are hoping to provide mid-day meals to 225 slum kids in a rehabilitation colony in Bawana in north-west Delhi,' he added.

A portion of the fund collected, approximately Rs.150,000, will also be contributed towards building a hostel for street kids in the same area. According to Lobo, the project of the hostel is a joint initiative of different schools.

Besides accommodating them, the hostel will offer space for educational activities for the street kids.

The musical evening will see Dhwani, a multi-lingual group of singers, perform in the school.
