Sonia, Rahul Gandhi hit Jharkhand poll campaign trail
11/20/2009 7:05:00 PM

Ranchi, Nov 20 (IANS) The Congress is campaigning hard in Jharkhand for the coming assembly polls, with party chief Sonia Gandhi addressing two rallies in the state Friday and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi set to address four meetings Saturday.

Sonia Gandhi addressed two rallies at Dhanbad and Dumka.

'On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi will address four rallies. One of the rallies will take place in Kanke in Ranchi,' said Shailesh Kumar, the Congress state unit general secretary.

Before the poll dates were announced, Rahul Gandhi had visited nine districts of the state over two days last month and tried to win the hearts of the tribals and Dalits.

Sonia Gandhi, addressing a rally in Dhanbad, said: 'Many steps have been taken in the last few months for the people of the state. NREGS (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) job cards have been distributed, food grains were distributed during the drought and many fair price shops were opened to ensure food grain at cheaper rates to the people.'

President's rule was imposed in the state in January. Five-phased polls will be held in the state Nov 25-Dec 18.
