Islamabad bombings mastermind arrested: Police
11/20/2009 7:39:00 PM

Islamabad, Nov 20 (IANS) The alleged mastermind of the suicide attacks on the World Food Programme office and on a police helpline office here has been arrested, police said Friday.

Briefing reporters, Islamabad Inspector General of Police Kalim Imam said the suspect, Jamsheed alias Tahir belonged to the tribal Orakzai Agency in the country's restive northwest.

A suicide jacket recovered from Jamsheed was also displayed at the briefing, Online news agency reported.

Imam said Jamsheed used two men - Muhammad alias Ilyas and Haroon - as suicide bombers to attack the World Food Programme office here and the Rescue 15 police helpline office.

Police have also got key clues about the elements involved in firing incidents on military officials in Islamabad, the officer added.

Police paraded the suspect before a battery of cameras. He had a shaved head, sported a black beard and was wearing a traditional brown salwar kameez.

The suspect, police said, was associated with Islamabad's Lal Masjid (Red Mosque), where around 100 people were killed when troops stormed the mosque to flush out militants in July 2007, sparking a suicide and bombing campaign that still continues and which has killed more than 2,550 people nationwide.

Five people, including two women, were killed in the attack on the World Food Programme office Oct 5.

On June 6, two policemen were killed after a young man carried out a suicide attack against the Rescue 15 office.
