Fusion can enrich music, says Rao
5/10/2012 9:00:00 PM

Aligarh, May 10 (IANS) Fusion experiment can give new dimension to music if used wisely, renowned Sitar composer and performer Sri Shubhendra Rao said here.

He also said that musicians must have knowledge of their roots before breaking established rules of music.

Rao was interacting with faculty and students of Mangalayatan University before performing at a programme organised by SPICMACAY.

'School education is necessary for newcomers. Only after that guru shishya tradition can be adopted for further learning,' he said.

'The artist must learn every day to excel in his career.

'We should understand the beauty and depth of Indian folk music. I am working in this direction and trying to communicate this message to every Indian folk admirer,' he added.

He said Indian folk art needed a role model akin to a Sachin Tendulkar.

'Only then can Indian folk art be promoted as a good career for children.'

Sri Rao is ranked amongst the key soloists of India. He has performed in the US, Britain, Australia and South Africa.

He is considered a thinking musician, constantly endeavouring to carry his instrument beyond conventional boundaries.
