London, Jun 1 (ANI): Kevin Pietersen's shock retirement from the fifty over format of the game has put a question mark on the viability of the one-day format in today's game, according to cricket writer Dean Wilson.

Pietersen had expressed his desire to play in the Twenty20, but the England and Wales Cricket Board rejected his plea, citing their rule, which says if any player doesn't make himself available for both the shorter versions of game, he won't be considered for any of them.

Both Pietersen and the England and Wales Cricket Board have vindicated their current stance, said Wilson in his column for the Daily Mirror.

He (Pietersen) tried to make himself available for T20 cricket only but the ECB rightly knocked him back, and said you must play both like everyone else or none at all, Wilson said.

Well done to the ECB for sticking to their guns and fair play to Kevin for sticking to his. He has made a sacrifice by giving up T20 cricket showing just how much he didn't want to play the 50-over stuff, he added.

Wilson believes if the one-day format continues to remain as unappealing as it is right now, then Pietersen's retirement could encourage other players to do the same.

He added: Perhaps that is the question we should be asking. If one day cricket and its schedule is so unappealing to one of the best one day players in the world then does that format of the game have much of a future in its current form?

Pietersen is not the only player to have little love for it. Graeme Swann has repeatedly spoken in the same vein about how demanding the one day circuit is and might we see him take the same route sooner rather than later? he concludes. (ANI)
