Bangalore, June 1 (IANS) Piyush Sangwan, the 13-year old from Gurgaon's DLF Golf and Country Club, clinched his maiden title of the year as he won the Toyota-IGU Southern India golf tournament for juniors at the KGA course here Friday.

Sangwan, who was tied third on the penultimate day of the tournament, emerged victorious with a splendid round of 3-under par on the deciding day for a four-day total of 294 (73-76-76-69) to top the combined under-18 and under-14 age categories.

Shubhankar Sharma from ITC Classic Golf Resort, New Delhi and Viraj Madappa of Tollygunge Golf Club, Kolkata finished second and third, with total scores of 296 (75-76-73-72) and 300 (74-77-76-73) respectively.

Eighteen-year-old Arjun Singh, who was the surprise leader on day three, was unable to convert that performance into a top three finish and ended tied fourth with Aman Raj of Patna Golf Course carding a total score of 302.

It Sangwan's first win of the season out of five outings which included two second place finishes at Rajasthan Junior Open and the Karnataka Juniors.

Sangwan said: It was a good day. I got a little lucky even though I missed a few putts, but it worked out for me in the end. It was especially good for me because I had to power through severe cramps post the 13th hole.

Sharma, who finished overall second and first in the under-18 category said:

I was playing well. I was leading my group with a score of 3-under par at one point. I had a good shot, but hit the floodlight on the 18th and that set me back.

The players now head to the third leg of the tour in Mumbai.
