Mathura tense, two dead
6/2/2012 12:38:00 PM

Lucknow, June 2 (IANS) The death toll in the communal flare-up in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura town rose to two Saturday, with a man succumbing to his injuries.

Home department officials told IANS that while the situation was now under control, it was tense.

We are trying to ensure that the communal frenzy is not repeated and we have deployed adequate forces in Kosikalan area, a senior police official said.

One person was killed Friday night and about a dozen were injured after communal clashes erupted in Mathura, 135 km south of New Delhi and 380 km from Lucknow.

A second man, who was injured in the night, died Saturday morning.

Curfew was clamped overnight in Kosikalan and heavy police reinforcements were rushed to the site.

By then, however, more than three dozen shops were gutted, and 12 two-wheelers and four wheelers were set on fire by mobs.

The Uttar Pradesh government has asked all districts to be on alert to prevent any spread of the communal violence.

Police said they were looking for people who incited the violence.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up on the Delhi-Agra highway, which adjoins Kosikalan.

Some miscreants tried to stone some vehicles on the highway during the violence.
