Women above 50 'as likely to suffer from eating disorders as teens'
6/21/2012 4:28:00 PM

London, June 21 (ANI): Women over 50 are as likely to suffer from eating disorders like bulimia as are young girls, a new study has revealed.

Researchers found that even those people who aged 75 and over can suffer from binge eating or purging problems.

The disorders are commonly seen as an issue for young women, but more than 70 percent of women aged 50 and above are trying to lose weight.

The study found that 62 percent of older women felt that their weight negatively impacted on their life.

Some women were reported to use a variety of methods to change their body, such as diet pills, diuretics, laxatives and vomiting.

The bottom line is that eating disorders and weight and shape concerns don't discriminate on the basis of age, Dr Cynthia Bulik, who led the US study, said.

The study has been published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders. (ANI)
