Wayne Rooney's horse wins first race at Haydock Park
7/6/2012 12:08:00 PM

London, July 6 (ANI): Wayne Rooney celebrated his first success as a racehorse owner when Yourartisonfire scored at Haydock Park.

The two-year-old colt is owned in partnership with Sunderland defender John O'Shea and other members of the Ontoawinner partnership, and trained in Middleham by Elaine Burke.

Unfortunately, Rooney, who is on holiday in Los Angeles, was unable to attend the race.

After finishing a promising fourth on his racecourse debut, Yourartisonfire was sent off the 6-4 favourite for the Distinction Doors Maiden Stakes.

They went quite steady - you can sit and wait but I thought I would get him rolling, the Daily Express quoted winning jockey Michael Metcalfe as saying.

I always thought he would pick them up in the end.

When I got him wide he picked up nicely and he'd probably even get an extra furlong the way he settled. He's very professional, he said.

Rooney became interested in racing through his former Manchester United team-mate Michael Owen and boss Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager.

Both have enjoyed high profile success with their racehorses.

Until the win, Rooney had not enjoyed the best of luck with his other runner Pippy.

The two-year-old finished last when carrying Rooney's colours for the first time at Chester but indicated he can also win a race after his promising second at Folkestone last month. (ANI)
