Olympic shooting: Cernogoraz claims trap gold in shootout
8/6/2012 10:17:00 PM

London, Aug 6 (IANS/RIA Novosti) European champion Giovanni Cernogoraz held his nerve in a gold medal shootout to take the Olympic title in the men's trap Monday.

The Croatian fired the winning shot after reigning World Champion Massimo Fabbrizi missed his fifth in the sudden death contest, settling for silver.

Cernogoraz had qualified for the final in the sixth place. He and Fabbrizi scored 146 to tie for the lead.

Fehaid Aldeehani of Kuwait took the bronze, also in a shootout, with Australia's Michael Diamond, after both had posted 145.

Diamond, who won the trap at Atlanta 1996 and also at his home Games in Sydney four years later, had entered the final as hot favourite after equalling the world record with a perfect 125 in qualifying.

Diamond missed six clays in the final round to let his lead slip and couldn't recover for a medal.
