Pak SC orders action against channels for airing 'obscene' programmes
8/7/2012 6:35:00 PM

Islamabad, Aug 7 (ANI): The Pakistan Supreme Court has directed the acting chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to take strict action against television channels airing 'obscene' programmes and advertisements.

Justice (retired) Wajihuddin Ahmed and former Jamaat Islami chief, Qazi Hussain Ahmed had written to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry against obscenity on TV channels, reports The News.

The chief justice directed the chairman Abdul Jabbar to categorise programmes with proper ratings, like in the Western media.

In his defense, Jabbar told the court that Indian channels were banned in Pakistan to restrain broadcast of any improper programmes.

The court also took notice of channels that aired programmes against the judiciary and directed Jabbar to get the record of such programmes and submit it before the court on the next date of hearing.

The court granted a week's time to the regulatory authority to look into the matter. (ANI)
