Pak's future depends on its move on Haqqani Network: Editorial
8/7/2012 6:35:00 PM

Islamabad, Aug 7 (ANI): An editorial in a Pakistani daily has said the country's future depends upon the delivery of the commitment to take 'joint action' on the Haqqanis, that it is vaguely making to the Americans.

According to recent media reports, senior U.S. and Pakistani military commanders in Islamabad have reached an understanding on joint operations against the Haqqani network. Army Chief General Ashraf Pervez Kayani too has vowed to take action against the Haqqani Network, whom the U.S. holds accountable of launching attacks on its forces in Afghanistan.

If Pakistan gives up the Haqqani network, it gives up its trump card in the Afghan endgame, it said. But the new line in Pakistan is that the doctrine of strategic depth is no longer the embraced philosophy and a new approach has been adopted, it added.

The editorial said it is time for Pakistan to make a comprehensive policy shift, if it wants to survive in the international community, most importantly because Pakistan's economy is in the process of a meltdown that cannot be halted without international help. (ANI)
